Dr. Thomas Schoonover (1936-2023)

We are sad to report that Dr. Thomas Schoonover, professor of history emeritus, died on December 24, 2023. Schoonover was a brilliant scholar in widely ranging fields—from the history of leisure, the U.S. Civil War, and the history of labor, to his most noted work on U.S. relations with Latin America.
Tom taught at UL Lafayette from 1969-2005. During that time, he published eight books and numerous scholarly articles. Even after his retirement, he was a regular participant at departmental functions and programs. For many of us, he and his wife Ebba were close friends and valuable mentors.
