Study the Human Experience

In the Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy, explore the stories of who we are, where we came from, and why and how we think the way we do.

We offer a bachelors and two masters degrees in history as well as graduate certificates. We also offer three minors: history, geography, and philosophy.

Learn From the Best

Learn from some of the most dynamic and engaging faculty members on campus! Our department is known for exceptional faculty and a range of compelling and thoughtful courses and projects.

Our faculty members are among the best in the world, and they work closely with our students to develop and enhance their ability to think critically, write effectively, speak persuasively, and construct compelling arguments—skills that are necessary for a successful career in any field.

Innovative Approaches

History graduate students outfit a vintage Airstream trailer with an interpretive exhibit that hits the road to take history directly out of the classroom and to the public.

Department of History, Geography & Philosophy

As the home of foundational disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, the Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy invites you to think critically about the human experience across time and space.

As a department, we focus on the study and analysis of human actions and ideas. Our faculty members are among the best in their field, and they work closely with our students to develop and enhance their ability to think critically, write effectively, speak persuasively, and construct compelling arguments—skills that are necessary for a successful career in any field.

We're also known for thinking out of the box. We've designed a traveling history museum called Museum on the Move, taken students on field experiences with our GeoTours excursions, and we're finding ways to tell our culture's stories through new technology.

Whether you are interested in taking an elective, declaring a minor, major, or pursuing a graduate degree, we invite you to make us your academic home.
