Geography Minor
Geography is a minor-only program at UL Lafayette. As a small unit, we provide our students a high degree of individual attention. We offer a wide range of courses that encompasses the diversity of the discipline and provide students with a solid foundation in geography. The minor is available to any student enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at the University.
Why Geography?
There is no better time to study geography than now! 21st century problems are more complex than ever and require a holistic perspective, interdisciplinary approach, and a multifaceted field capable of integrating social science, earth systems science, and technology that lead to better understanding and solutions.
If you are interested in working with people, nature, or technology, then you should minor in geography! Geography is concerned with the interaction between people and nature, including how humans have modified the environment, and the effects of natural forces on society.
At one level, geography is the study of the human dimensions of the world. It deals with the spatial organization, variation, and activities of people and places. On the other hand, geography studies the different components of the environment: atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere.
A minor in geography gives you a broad foundation to pursue a wide range of educational and employment options. Most students do not choose a minor until they have a year or two in school, so it is seldom too late to consider geography. If you want to know more, email us at geography@louisiana.edu. We are always happy to discuss geography with students.
