Congratulations to Dr. Jim Coby, Associate Professor of English at Indiana University Kokomo, who has been chosen as the recipient of the Jamie and Thelma Guilbeau UL Lafayette Collections Research Grant. The grant, funded by the Guilbeau Charitable Trust, is awarded to a researcher who is not a faculty member, staff member, or student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Its intention is to encourage work in the various archival holdings at UL Lafayette, including the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collections, the Ernest J. Gaines Center, the Cajun and Creole Music Collection, the Center for Louisiana Studies, and the Guilbeau Center for Public History.
Dr. Coby intends to use the grant funds to travel to the Ernest J. Gaines Center. His research project aims to explore how the expansive paradigms through which we understand literature of the American South and the Southern Hemisphere in conversation with one another - wartime experiences, issues of race, environmental concerns - might be used to better understand the work of one of the most storied, yet understudied Southern authors, Ernest J. Gaines.
