UL Chapter of History Honor Society Named National Chapter of the Year (Again)
Mon, 09/08/2025 - 3:59pmThe Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy is proud to announce that Phi Alpha Theta, History Honor Society has named UL’s Epsilon-Xi as Chapter of the Year for Division V. This is the eighth time our chapter has received the distinction.
The chapter earned the recognition as a result of its activities during the 2024-2025 academic year. Notably, several of the chapter’s members made professional presentations at the organization’s national convention in Washington, D.C., as well as at the Louisiana Regional meeting, the latter of which the Epsilon-Xi chapter hosted. The local chapter also hosts bi-weekly meetings during the school year and undertakes numerous activities to promote historical scholarship, engage in community service, and develop connections with faculty members. Among the popular social events are the Dinner With A Professor and History Movie Nights.
Undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in history may participate in Epsilon-Xi’s activities whether they are members of the society or not. To become a member, undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 courses) in History, earned in the classroom, online, or through AP or transfer credits (or a combination thereof). A minimum GPA of 3.1 in History and 3.0 GPA overall are required. Students need not be history majors to apply. Graduate students should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their master’s degree in history, have a GPA of better than 3.5, and have completed approximately 30 percent of the institutional or program requirements for the master’s degree.
Phi Alpha Theta is “a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.” Division V includes universities with student populations between 15,001 and 23,000.
The Epsilon-Xi chapter is co-advised by Dr. Robin Hermann and Michael Martin.
